I wonder how much of this is a framing issue caused by current social settings i.e. our neoliberal conditioning: "there's no such thing as society" as Thatcher said. Compare with Dalai Lamas emphasis on compassion as "selfless selfishness"; it's actually good for us on a well being and a practical level to feel compassion and help others; the heavily evidence based "five ways to well being" includes giving as one of the ways.
